€255 billion. That's what Europe needs to invest in water by 2030 to protect both its economy and its environment.
A recent Water Europe study lays out the scale of the challenge: water scarcity already affects 38% of the EU population, and 29% of EU territory is under water stress.
At the same time, industries critical to Europe's strategic autonomy — semiconductors, data centres, renewable hydrogen, and EV batteries — are set to grow from €192 billion to nearly €1 trillion by 2030. That comes with a 2.6× increase in water demand.
The math simply doesn't work without massive investment in water infrastructure, purification, and closed-loop systems.
For financial services and sustainability teams, this raises real questions:
- How are we assessing water-related physical and transition risks in our portfolios?
- Are we pricing in the dependency of high-growth sectors on increasingly scarce water resources?
- What role can insurers and investors play in closing this €255 billion investment gap?
Water is the connector between climate, biodiversity, and the real economy. It's time we treat it that way.
